For the KUNST-STATION in the main train station in Wolfsburg, the artist Nic Hess has created a room installation that is not limited to the walls of the waiting area but stretches up to the ceiling of the entrance area of the train station. Vibrant abstract surfaces of colour give rise to striking forms and dynamic patterns. What is, however notable is the artist’s not only striking but also subtle language of forms and signs, with which he succeeds in making the structural characteristics of the train station hall such as, for example, the ascending concrete pillars and the functional architecture visible to and able to be experienced by visitors, guests and travellers.

Since his studies at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Swiss-born artist has been working on walls with brushes, colour markers, spray cans and adhesive tape. The examination regarding content frequently takes place in the run-up to the realisation of an artistic work. The visual motifs and possible guiding concepts that are developed in this way nonetheless first obtain their specific form – spontaneously –based on the particular situation. Within this process, Nic Hess not only traces the inner dynamic of a space. In his artistic action, the artist also enters into a direct, quite intuitive competition with the images and signs that vie for our attention on site.

The artist employs alienated trademarks, pictograms and brand labels not only to simply penetrate and break open our rigid patterns of perception. Hess’ expansive “drawing installations” instead also provoke a direct, spontaneous examination of global carriers of meaning, collective signs and ever-recurring symbols of our time. And thus the artist succeeds in creating new contexts in our everyday world without them seeming pithy as a result.

Nic Hess was born in Zurich in 1968 and lives and works in Zurich and London.

An exhibition in cooperation with the Deutsche Bahn, the Schiller 40 – Coworkingspace Wolfsburg and the Figge von Rosen Galerie, Cologne.
