In the Kunst-Station, Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg in collaboration with the Deutsche Bahn regularly presents artistic projects that invite viewers to reflect and discover new things. After a large wall-drawing, several photographic works and a site-specific installation, the artist Lothar Götz, who lives in London, has now realised the mural painting “La Jetée”, which transforms the waiting area into a room filled with colour. Lothar Götz has been known for his site-specific projects in Europe for more than ten years. His abstract mural paintings can be found in the London Underground, in Heathrow Airport, in schools and universities and also in private houses, amongst other locations. With “La Jetée” in the Kunst-Station in the main train station in Wolfsburg, Lothar Götz has created a new wall work that reacts to the architecture of the train station and engages in dialogue with it. With its functional structure, the building, which is a historic landmark, exhibits features typical of the 1950s with the transparent openness of the entrance façade, the curved butterfly roofs over the platforms, and the striking reinforced concrete roof in the entrance area. Starting from the existing spatial conditions of the waiting area in the Wolfsburg main train station, Lothar Götz comprehends the functional architecture as a challenge of form. “I like the tension of spaces whose architecture initially seems unwieldy or complicated to me,” says the artist. With basic geometric structures and colour concepts, the wall work clarifies the architectural situation of the space. Lothar Götz was born in Günzburg in 1963. He studied in Aachen, Wuppertal and Düsseldorf before moving to London in 1998 to do his masters in painting at the Royal College of Art. Since 1999, he has been teaching at the University of Sunderland and in 2010 received one of the highest awards in Great Britain, the Abbey Fellowship London, The British School at Rome. The installation is presented in connection with Lothar Götz’s exhibition “Don’t Look Now” in the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg – with the friendly support of the MEGA eG and the Neuland Wohnungsgesellschaft mbH.
